What is GR-3108-CORE?

GR-3108-CORE is a generic requirement document published by Telcordia Technologies, a subsidiary of Ericsson. It specifies the environmental conditions and test methods for network equipment that is installed in OSP, such as controlled environmental vaults, huts, cabinets, poles, towers, pedestals, and customer premises.

The purpose of GR-3108-CORE is to ensure that the network equipment can withstand the harsh and variable environments that are encountered in OSP, such as extreme temperatures, humidity, salt fog, wind, rain, snow, ice, lightning, earthquakes, rodents, insects, vandalism, and fire.

GR-3108-CORE defines four classes of equipment based on the degree of protection and exposure to the outside elements:

  • Class 1: Equipment in controlled or protected environments, such as central offices, telecom closets, or residential locations. These environments have active heating and cooling systems that maintain the temperature and humidity within a specified range.

  • Class 2: Protected equipment in outside environments, such as outdoor enclosures or customer premise locations that are not fully controlled. These environments have some passive or active means of environmental control, such as cooling fans, heat exchangers, or raised fins.

  • Class 3: Protected equipment in severe outside environments, such as poles, towers, or pedestals that are exposed to direct sunlight, wind, rain, snow, ice, or dust. These environments have minimal or no environmental control and require robust enclosures or housings to protect the equipment.

  • Class 4: Products in unprotected environment directly exposed to the weather, such as antennas or sensors that are mounted on poles or towers. These products have no enclosure or housing and must be designed to resist the effects of weathering.

The equipment classes determine the applicable environmental tests and criteria that the network equipment must meet or exceed to comply with GR-3108-CORE. Some of the tests include thermal cycling, cold start, hot start, humidity cycling, salt fog exposure, closure integrity, vibration resistance, seismic resistance, surge immunity, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and safety.
