Frister And Rossman Sewing Machines Serial Number High Quality
Straight stitch is best done on a straight stitch only machine where the needle bar can only go up and down and never left, right or angular. The fact that lateral motion is possible, will often veer the needle off the straight and narrow due to the vibrations during sewing. To prevent it, zig-zag machines often have a locking mechanism of some kind.

- I can't see a serial number on it anywhere; there's a big letter E on it and a brass plate added by the British agent, Quitmann of London; nothing more precise. Where's the serial number hiding?- if we did find the number I'm not sure what to do with it; unlike with Singers, there seems to be no third-party site for F&R serial numbers, and F&R's own website (www.frister.com) is a browser- crashing abortion (presumably it needs Microsoft dreckware to work?) which I have no intention of ever trying to look at again.Does the E give anything away about the date?My mum had an F&R machine that looked vaguely similar; she must have hadit at least since the Fifties, maybe since before the war. I rememberher getting the motor fitted around 1960.Incidentally, why do so many old sewing machines have Egyptian-motifdesigns? They could have done Pre-Raphaelite, Art Nouveau, VictorianGothic, Italian Fascist speed-&-streamlines or wacky-angled SovietFuturism, but you usually got sphinxes and Greek keys instead.========> Email to "jc" at this site; email to "bogus" will bounce.
A: Frister & Rossmann was founded by Gustav Rossmann and Robert Frister in Berlin, Germany, in 1864. It was the largest sewing machine manufacturer in Germany in the late 1800s and made millions of sewing machines.
The company was sold in 1925 to Gritzner & Kayser, which continued to make sewing machines under the Frister & Rossmann name. Collectors want the early sewing machine models that have gold trim and fancy decorations.
My Singer machine was made in Clydebank, Scotland in 1937. The Singer serial number is EB 202.824. This is an oscillating shuttle machine Model 15-88 and the scroll face is more ornate.
The American sewing machine firm Singer Manufacturing Co opened an office in Glasgow, Scotland in 1856. The huge demand for their product encouraged them to set up a workshop to assemble sewing machines near George Square in 1867 and then to build a factory in James Street, Bridgeton, in the 1870s which produced 54,000 machines the following year. The building of the Singer factory in Kilbowie, later Clydebank, started on the 8th May 1882 and it was opened in 1885. The floor area was nearly one million square feet and seven thousand workers were employed producing on average 13.000 machines a week. It was the largest sewing machine factory in the World, finally closing in 1980.
