17) “The Fox And The Crow” is a song by the band Foxes. The song is the third track on their debut album Crescent Moon, and was released on iTunes on December 28, 2009. It is the group’s first single, and was later included in their EP Winter Love. The song is about a woman who “lived in a foxhole” with her boyfriend after a break-up, and later finds herself trapped in a relationship with a man who seems to be abusive.
The drums were recorded in a church basement in Brooklyn by drummer, Dan Deacon (of Dan Deacon and His Shiny Little Machines), with a mix engineered by drummer Patrick Sullivan. The song was mixed by Charlie Englert in New York and mastered by Julian Burg at Manna Music in Brooklyn.
Members of Foxes’ first incarnation, Deacon and singer Nathan Nockels (also of Dan Deacon), started the group in high school and were joined by drummer Sullivan before they graduated. The band subsequently relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, where they played the local music scene for a few years before relocating to Chicago. At the time, they were playing with the band YACHT, and then later with Imperial Teen. They moved to New York City in 2006 and released their debut album Crescent Moon in 2009.
The Foxes were named in an interview with Pitchfork by Foxes' vocalist Nathan Nockels, who stated, “We’re more like a club band… we wanted to stay within the club rock world, but have it speak to us more.”
The band has since moved away from an industrial sound towards a more grunge-like sound. The Foxes have released four albums with Williams on drums, and three albums with Deacon. They have toured extensively in North America, Europe, and South America, and have played festivals such as Lollapalooza and SXSW.
In the 20th century, the word torrent began to be used in various, sometimes contradictory, ways. The first meaning was the water flow which carried the earth's crust, the second, the word for the record of the verse in a book or poem. In a torrent of praise, Dante Alighieri compared all the elements of the universe to the Divine Light. The word gained new connotations when it became a metaphor for an ephemeral and irresistible flood of opinion or emotion, very often as a signal of dislike. Flows of water could be viewed in the mirror darkening windows of the great houses of Europe, as a black torrent of depression passed along the streets on the night of January 9, 1933. Torrents of people, crying for the dead and the oppressed, swept through the streets of Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Warsaw, and many other cities on the night of November 9, 1943. A torrent of shame for the iniquity of the Nazi regime smashed its way across the land of the Jews and the non-Jews, on May 5, 1945.
