Mario Party is a series of games that have been released almost every year since its debut. The game was first released in Japan in September 2001 and has been ported to all platforms since 2003, with the exception of the Wii U. It has been a commercial success, with the latest game Mario Party: Island Tour recently being the sixth best selling game for the 3DS.
The original Mario Party was released when 3D gaming was in its heyday. Although the graphics were not very sophisticated by today's standards, the game was innovative. Mario joined forces with various other characters from the Mario series in a board game-style, party-style of game. The game offered lots of minigames, a campy music, and a variety of modes of play, including traditional and minigames, a storytelling mode, and even a competitive round where players battled against one another. For the most part, the game offered puzzles where players had to put the Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Waluigi, Daisy, and Bowser characters into various logical places. However, there were also minigames that was just based on your guess of the character. These included Mario vs. Wario, and Peach vs. Kamek.
Mario Party is a great game to pick up and play with friends who have all different types of play styles. Multiplayer was supported by linking players to a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and online match-making was also available (at a charge if I recall correctly).
