Pushpanath's death comes as a huge shock to the Malayalam reading public who had grown accustomed to his prolific output. The writer was best known for his tales of Malayalam detective Pushpanath, now a popular character in Indian TV serials, despite coming up with a number of novels that have been honoured with several awards.
Pushpanath was awarded the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award for Novel twice; in 1974 and 1980. His works also won the Kerala State award for Best Novel twice, in 1978 and 1994. He was also awarded the Padma Shri in the year 2001.
His most recent novels were Mrityudandam, a saga on the Indian armed forces, and a collection of short stories titled Nizhayathum. They were published last year by the Keralite publishing house, Moovay Publishers.
His novel Mrityudandam has been adapted for television. The story revolves around an army officer, Mrityudandam, who has a secret deal with the Indian army to train his own men, only to be later framed.
“I’m reading Pushpanath’s writings for the first time at the moment. He was one of my favourite writers. We met on our first day at the college. I didn’t know him for too long. But, to say the least, he was my mentor. I read Pushpanath’s short stories in high school when I was in class X. He was a gifted writer and I loved his style.”
The 65-year-old Malayalam author passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He had been suffering from an illness for several months. Malayalam author Kottayam Pushpanath who is suffering from cancer, passed away in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. The veteran author’s son, who was in Kottayam, confirmed the sad news to TNM.
