Narrative thinking is a basic concept in cultural studies which draws an analogy between the meaning making and the act of storytelling. As narrative theory, it refers to several ways of thinking, such as the narrative perspective and the narrative practice. Moreover, narrative thinking has a direct connection to the epistemology of cultural studies. The relationship between meanings and their contexts can be understood in a narrative manner. This serves as a way of understanding historical events and people, as well as the reality of the world.
Performance theory concerns the social actors who produce their identities and positions in the public sphere. Performance theory has its roots in social psychology and sociology, but also related to the study of theatre and body.
Gender studies is yet another concept in cultural studies. It is a field of inquiry which analyses the intersection between gender, gender performance, and cultural constructs. Gender studies is used to indicate the social and cultural influences on gender. Furthermore, this approach is interested in the ways in which gender is constructed, as well as how these constructions are transmitted, maintained, or challenged. Gender studies centers on both the experiences of people and the representations of people. It investigates why we have certain categories and what these categories do in the first place.
Postmodernism is characterized by the rejection of modern values and some of the basic concepts of traditional Western philosophy. This is most obvious in France, Germany and the United States, but it was also embraced in western culture.
Postmodernism is defined as a critical approach to knowledge. It stresses the importance of studying how we produce and understand knowledge, not only by examining facts or figures but also by exploring and questioning our personal perceptions, ideas and feelings.
The concept of critical theory is also firmly rooted in cultural studies. Critical theory can be defined as a set of social theories, practices and institutions that form a social and political order in society. It is a method of thinking that uses the tools of sociology, psychology, and philosophy. Furthermore, critical theory is based on the idea that power relations shape society and not vice versa. It suggests that social structures are as changeable as they are inescapable and that they are not neutral. The discipline of cultural studies is based on a process of social criticism and self-reflection. Hence, human understanding is said to be socially constructed. Such a perspective denies the existence of a social world that is determined by universal reality or objective truths. Hence, cultural studies rejects the notion of a singular, fixed and timeless social order. Instead, it focuses on the meanings and practices of life that are disseminated among individuals.
